Making Dua For Non-Muslims

  • Q1 - Can non-Muslims go to heaven after they die?? Is there any way at all for them to go to heaven, one that involves Muslims saying dua for him or praying that person will go to heaven? If there is, can it work for non-Muslims who commit suicide?

A - The absolute Owner of Heaven and Hell is Allah and no one else. We cannot judge people based on appearances. Iman (faith) has different layers and has to do with peoples understanding and relationship with Allah. We cannot simply divide people into Muslims and non- Muslims and say that Muslims go to Heaven and non-Muslims to the Hellfire. If the individual has received incontrovertible proof (hujjah) about matters of faith and he/she then knowingly rejects the truth, then there is no hope, but if a person doesnt know about the truth and comes to a wrong conclusion, or if he/she is simply ignorant and had a strong relationship with Allah but the hujjah (proof) was not clear to him/her (e.g. confusing), in that case Allah is the All-Just, the All-Compassionate and the All-Merciful and He will deal with such a person in the best way.

For non-Muslims, yes we can do dua for anyone that did not reject the truth after the truth was convincingly and definitely manifest to them.

In regards to suicide, the issue is not simple. Remember that people go through mental and psychological breakdowns and therefore their actions are many not be the result of a stable state of mind and as such, we cannot make definitive judgments about them as well in terms of what will happen in the Afterlife.
